The typical American has a good credit score and is carrying less credit card debt and doing a better job of paying bills on time than 10 years ago, according to the credit bureau Experian. Pat yourself on the back, America!

Here are a few more nuggets from Experian's 2019 State of Credit report: The average American has three regular credit cards with balances totaling about $6,500, and 2.6 store cards (like the Target Red Card) with total balances of around $1,900. The average credit score nationwide is 680.

That's considered "good." The report looks at VantageScores, which range from 300 to 850.

Some states have only "fair" average scores, while others can get all braggy about their citizens' much better credit. Follow along as we count down to the state with America's best average credit score. The ranking includes the District of Columbia.

51. Mississippi

The average credit score in the Magnolia State is 652, which is considered only "fair." A "good" VantageScore is between 661 and 780, while anything above that is "excellent." A score of 601 to 660 is fair, and lower scores are "poor" or "very poor."
