If you have Amazon Prime, here's how you can save 50 cents a gallon on gas through July 5

Gas prices might be coming down from their recent highs, but for a lot of people, the price of petrol is still much too high. If those folks happen to be Amazon Prime members, though, they’ll get a little relief this weekend.

Prime members can save 50 cents per gallon from now until the end of July 5 at more than 7,500 bp, Amoco and participating ampm and Thorntons gas stations. That’s five times the normal savings offered by the program.

To get the savings, though, you’ll need to take a few steps beyond joining Prime.

How to get your 50-cent discount on gas

The promotion is being done in conjunction with the earnify app. Step one is to download the app and set up an account. The app is free and will automatically apply a five-cent savings when you use it to fill up, even if you aren’t a Prime member.

From there, you’ll want to link your Amazon Prime account to earnify. Do that by heading to this page on Amazon and clicking “Activate now.”

Find a participating station using the app and then use the app to signal which pump you’re using or just swipe the credit or debit card you have linked to your earnify account to get the discount.

Once the promotion ends, Prime members will continue to get a discount of 10 cents per gallon at those 7,500 stations.

Saving on Prime

An Amazon Prime membership costs $139 per year, so free shipping, gas savings and the other benefits it offers might still seem a financial stretch. If you’re on an especially tight budget, there are ways to get it for a bit less.

If you haven’t had Prime before, you can try it for free for 30 days, giving you access to all of the program’s benefits.

Students between the ages of 18 and 24 can get six months of Prime for free, followed by a discounted rate of $7.49 per month (half the current monthly rate).

The Prime Access plan, available to recipients of government assistance or income-verified customers, will cut the cost of a membership to just $6.99 per month, along with a 30-day free trial.

Holiday gas prices

The gas savings come as more than 72 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more over the July 4 week, with 61.4 million traveling by car.

Gas prices have fallen below $4 per gallon for the second week in a row, but are still high, as the war in Iran continues. The national average, as of July 2, was $3.84 per gallon. Drivers in California, however, will pay $5.50 per gallon on average.
