An artist's rendering of the Moen outdoor bathroom. Moen

Sink maker Moen unveils a Father’s Day sweepstakes for what dad really wants: His own $50,000 backyard bathroom

Forget the tie this Father’s Day. Walk straight past the cologne aisle. And put down that novelty mug. Get him what he really wants: His own private bathroom.

Moen, which is best known for manufacturing faucets, toilets and sinks, is building a luxury getaway for a lucky father that leans hard into the dad-loves-the-bathroom stereotype. But it’s only making one, so you might want to have a backup gift ready for this Sunday.

The Moen Port-A-Suite is a bathroom backyard hideaway that’s valued at $50,000. But one person will be able to buy it for $621 this Saturday, June 20. (Father’s Day is June 21 — or 6/21 — hence the price.) To be the winning buyer, you’ll have to be the first to submit a claim form at 10 a.m. Eastern. If you beat the crowd, you’ll receive a link to purchase the Port-A-Suite, which will then be delivered to what we hope is your dad’s backyard and not your own.

Sorry folks with dads in Hawaii and Alaska: They’re not eligible to enter.

This backyard bathroom is a lot more than a standard porta potty. In fact, it might end up being the nicest room in (well, right outside of) the house.

Swanky digs

The room comes equipped with an app-controlled smart shower, upscale fixtures from the company’s Cambium line, lighting meant to mimic an “ambient and natural” feel, and a smart lock.

It also includes a sleek urinal, but no actual toilet, so if dad is looking to — read a magazine, let’s say — you’ll have to pay for the upgrade to a Moen 5-Series Electronic Cleansing Toilet (eToilet), an all-in-one toilet and bidet the company says is “designed for maximum comfort and next-level bathroom bliss.” It retails for a little over $4,000.

Things to consider

As wonderful as a luxury bathroom in the backyard might sound, there are a few things you’ll want to consider before you try to lay claim to the Port-A-Suite. First, if dad lives in an area with a homeowners’ association (HOA), you’ll want to make sure that the installation of this hideaway is in compliance with any restrictions or covenants.

And while the $621 price includes delivery fees (within 8-12 weeks of purchase), you’ll have to handle setup yourself. Moen will get the unit to dad’s house, offload it with a forklift, then place it, but you’ll need to have an 8-foot by 8-foot concrete subfloor or firm grass area that’s capable of handling 2,500 pounds as well as a water supply. (Moen says you can feed that into the unit via a standard hose connection).

You’ll also need electrical access to power the hot water heater, the lights and outlets. And you’ll need to get a licensed plumber to connect the Port-A-Suite to existing septic or sewer lines.

It’s a potential headache, yes, but it might be worth it if you’re looking to get something unique for dad this year — and you’re not flush with cash.
