The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ) are the two biggest stock exchanges
in the nation and a focus for world investors. Both markets are located in New York City and hold standard trading hours from 9:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., Eastern Time (ET).
Markets are closed on federal holidays and close early the Friday after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve.
Extended trading hours allow you to enter premarket and after-hours trades. Premarket trading begins at 7:00 A.M. (ET) for the NYSE and 4:00 A.M. (ET) for the Nasdaq. After-hours trading closes at 8:00 P.M. (ET) for both markets.
Each market and brokerage has rules that could limit your trading abilities during pre-market and after-market hours. But most customers can buy and sell stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) during those trading windows as long as there's another party willing to take the other side of the trade.
London stock exchange trading hours
The United Kingdom may have left the European Union, but the London Stock Exchange (LSE) is still a major financial center and the hub of European trading. The LSE is open from 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Europe/London Time. The British close their market for eight holidays each year, as well as closing early two days each year.
Some huge European companies are listed on the LSE, including Royal Dutch Shell, Unilever and HSBC.

Euronext is owned by the same company as the NYSE. It is the major hub for mainland Europe's stock markets, with exchanges in Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Lisbon, London, Oslo and Paris. The European side of NYSE–Euronext runs from 9:00 A.M. to 5:40 P.M., Central European Time. It closes for five annual holidays plus two days closing early.
The largest companies on the Euronext exchange include recognizable names like Volkswagen, Heineken, and Michelin.
Tokyo stock exchange trading hours
Japan trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (JPX), open from 9:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. and from 12:30 P.M. to 3:00 P.M., Japan Standard Time. You read that right, the market closes for an hour every day for lunch. Markets in Japan are closed for 19 annual holidays, about double what you see in North America and Europe.
You may recognize some of the biggest companies on the JPX. These include Toyota, Sony and Nintendo.
Shanghai stock exchange trading hours
China's Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) and the smaller Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) operate from 9:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. and from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M., China Standard Time. In addition to closing an hour for lunch, these exchanges close a bit earlier in the afternoon than foreign counterparts. And the SZSE actually closes three minutes before 3:00. The SSE closes for 18 annual holidays. The longest closure is for National Day in October when the market closes for five days. The SZSE closes for 16 annual holidays.
The biggest companies traded on the SSE include PetroChina, ArcSoft, ICBC, and other banking and technology giants. As the hub of one of the world's largest economies, international traders often have Shanghai in their sights.
Hong Kong stock exchange trading hours
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) runs from 9:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. and 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., Hong Kong Standard Time. Asian markets are big on lunch breaks! The HKEX closes down for 13 annual holidays, mostly in line with holidays in mainland China, as well as closing early three days each year.
Some foreign companies are dual-listed on the KHEX, for example, HSBC. Major stocks listed on the KHEX include Tencent, China Mobile, and many banks, energy, and resource companies.
Toronto stock exchange trading hours
The major Canadian stock exchange is the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). It is located in the same time zone as the NYSE and Nasdaq. It maintains the same standard trading hours as those U.S. exchanges, from 9:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. (ET) each weekday. Canada has a different holiday calendar than the United States has, so trading schedules don't align exactly. The TSX closes for the 10 national holidays in Canada. And the TSX closes early Christmas Eve.
The TSX lists more companies than any other stock market in the world. Companies listed on the TSX include Shopify, Aberdeen, the Canadian Pacific Railway and dozens (perhaps hundreds) of resource companies.
Don't miss a trade opportunity due to trading hours
Make sure your brokerage allows premarket and after-hours trading if you're interested in actively managing your portfolio. When standard trading hours are closed, you can still buy and sell many investments thanks to extended hours, though your trades may not execute as quickly or efficiently as during regular hours.
Keep track of when you can trade, including national holidays. Your trading times will be different if you're buying and selling foreign stocks. But unless you invest directly in foreign stocks, which isn't all that common for U.S. investors, international market hours are not quite as important to you.
No one wants to get stuck being unable to sell an underperforming asset due to closing hours. Keep track of when you can buy and sell the assets you want to trade. Bookmark this page so you always have a quick reference on when you can buy and sell stocks around the world.
