Whether Grand Theft Auto VI would be a hit was never much of a mystery. Its forerunner, after all, has sold 230 million copies life to date and the first week of preorders for the forthcoming installment set a record for pre-sales, with an estimated $180 million worth of orders.
Still, not even the most optimistic fan or investor expected the game to impact the U.S. military.
Soldiers at Fort Stewart, Ga. who have been on the fence about whether to reenlist have been offered an unprecedented perk this year. An internal memo, which was leaked on Instagram and has been confirmed by multiple outlets, says soldiers who reenlist between Aug. 1 and Nov. 14 of this year will be given a four-day pass that will coincide with the launch of the game.

“This special pass is specifically designated to coincide with the highly anticipated release of the video game Grand Theft Auto VI,” reads the memo, written by Lt. Col. Ryan Hodgson, commander of the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion.
The fine print
There are a couple of limitations to the offer. No matter how enraptured players become with the game, they won’t be allowed to combine this with other passes. They get four days, no more. And they’ll have to meet the Army’s recently imposed body composition and physical fitness standards when the pass goes into effect. If they don’t, the pass is put on hold.
You’ll also have to reenlist for between two and six years of service.
The 3rd Infantry Division, which includes the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, is made up of roughly 15,000 soldiers and was recognized last year as being among the most successful at reenlisting troops. The offer is exclusive to the 3rd Infantry and is not being made across the entirety of the U.S. Army.
Nearly 2 dozen soldiers have already taken the division up on the offer.
While four days of leave to play a video game is certainly unusual, it’s far from the costliest incentive the armed forces have used to convince soldiers to reenlist. The Army regularly offers cash incentives of tens of thousands of dollars to soldiers and new applicants.

Records will be shattered
The release of Grand Theft Auto VI will be the most important event of the year for the video game industry. It is so highly anticipated that instead of just dropping a trailer online, as most games do, publisher Take-Two Interactive Software will debut the new trailer exclusively on Netflix on Aug. 27 3:00 p.m. ET.
The game is set in a fictional version of Florida and tracks the adventures of a criminal couple.
GTA VI has been in the works for over a decade. (Its predecessor came out in 2013, releasing on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.) Most games fade into obscurity after a year or so, however, GTA V has continued to be a cash machine. It has been one of the biggest selling titles of the past 10 years.
