Vehicle recalls are typically low-stress affairs. The manufacturer becomes aware of a problem and sends a note to owners asking them to come in and have it fixed. It’s important, but something you can generally do on your own schedule.
Ford’s latest recall, however, is much different.
On June 1, the American motor company issued a rare “Do Not Drive” warning to owners of select Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles on concerns about the suspension assembly. Some 4,653 Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles from the 2021 to 2026 model years are impacted by the advisory.
The automaker says it is “working closely with dealers to provide customers with complimentary towing of their vehicles for inspection and repair as needed.” Vehicle owners will also be able to have their vehicle inspected by someone from the dealership at the customer’s location where mobile service is offered.
Suspension issues
Here’s what could be wrong: The front lower control arm ball joints of the vehicle’s suspension system may not have been assembled correctly, says Ford. If that joint fails while the vehicle is in motion, the driver could lose steering control, which could lead to a crash, injury or worse.
Dealers will inspect and repair the Bronco Sports and Mavericks at no cost to the customer and will provide a rental car to affected owners for up to 30 days. Ford has also paused the sale or delivery of any affected new vehicles in its inventory.
Ford says it is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries so far because of this defect.

How to find out if you’re impacted
Some 2,296 Bronco Sport vehicles are affected by this recall, while another 2,357 Maverick vehicles are also affected.
If you own one of these vehicles within the potentially impacted model years, Ford asks you to enter your 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into the Recall Information page on its website. Alternatively, you can call Ford’s Customer Service Center at 1-833-807-3673 for assistance in arranging a tow and repair.
The issue was first identified on April 30, when a Bronco Sport owner brought in their car to the dealer saying the left front wheel became misaligned while driving after just one month. A data review of the plant where the car was built found a similar problem in another vehicle, which caused the issue to be escalated.
Ford’s Field Review Committee approved what’s known as a field action, to recall impacted vehicles and offer rentals to owners, on May 19. Notifications have already been sent to any potentially affected owners.
