The last three years have seen an average annual inflation of 5.6%, the highest three year average inflation rate since the early 1980s recession.
With this in mind, we looked at data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) and Redfin to find out how far salaries have kept up with inflation over the last five years, and how much money we will have in our pockets in the next five years if things carry on in the same direction.
Key findings
- 97% of occupations' salaries have failed to keep up with inflation over the last five years.
- Salaries have fallen by an average of 8.2% in the last five years.
- Sanitation and environmental conservation related jobs have seen the largest salary cuts of all industries. Salaries have fallen by an average of 10.4% in this industry.
- Despite this, house prices have risen by an average of 56% in the last 5 years.

Agriculture and food production
Salaries in agriculture and food production fell by an average of 7.4% in the last five years.
Agriculture and food scientists have been hit the hardest, facing a salary decrease of 9.24% in the last five years.
Allied health professionals
Allied health professionals have had an average 7.85% pay decrease in the last five years.
Medical transcriptionists have been hit the hardest, suffering a 15.72% salary decrease in the last five years.
Artists
People working in the arts have had an average salary decrease of 4.76% in the last five years.
Interestingly, models' salaries have actually increased significantly in this time, going up by 13.25%.
Aviation
People working in the aviation industry have seen a salary decrease of 3.87% in the last five years.
Commercial pilot is one of the few occupations whose pay increase has outpaced inflation, with a real world pay increase of 2.11% in the last five years.
Construction
Construction professionals have suffered an average pay decrease of 8.33% in the last five years.
Construction managers have seen the biggest pay decrease, with a 12.10% decrease in the last five years.
Customer facing roles
Customer facing roles have seen an average salary decrease of 3.53% in the last five years.
Gambling services workers are one of the few occupations whose salary growth has outpaced inflation. They have had a 3.11% increase in pay in the last five years.
Doctors and dentists
Doctors and dentists have had an average salary decrease of 10.33% in the last five years.
Dentists salaries are expected to drop by $24,000 in the next five years if inflation continues at the same rate.
Education
Education professionals’ salaries have decreased by 10.16% in the last five years.
Teachers’ salaries have decreased by 12.05% in this time.
Energy
Energy professionals have suffered an average salary drop of 10.75% in the last five years.
Engineering
Engineering professionals have suffered an average salary decrease of 11.59%.
Bioengineers and biomedical engineers have been hit the hardest, suffering a 17.28% salary decrease in the last five years.
Events
Events professionals have suffered a 9.68% loss in the last five years.
Finance
Finance professionals’ salaries have decreased 10.64% in the last five years.
Freight and logistics
Freight and logistics professional’s salaries have decreased by 8.51% in the last five years.
Logisticians have suffered the biggest pay cuts, with their salaries going down by 14.46% in the last five years.
Hospitality
Hospitality professionals’ salaries have gone down by 1.87% in the last five years.
Waiters and waitresses are one of the few professions whose salaries have kept up with inflation. Their salaries have increased by 1.73% in the last five years.
Human resources
Human resources professionals' salaries have decreased by 7.78% in the last five years.
Insurance
Insurance professionals' salaries have decreased by an average of 11% in the last five years.
IT
IT professionals’ salaries have decreased by an average of 10% in the last five years.
Legal
Legal professionals' salaries have decreased by an average of 9% in the last five years.
Life science
Life scientists’ salaries have decreased by an average of 8.61% in the last five years.
Management
Management is the only industry in which salaries have matched inflation. Management professionals's salaries have increased by 2.13% in the last five years.
Operations and research analysts have had the largest growth in salary of all occupations, with their salaries increasing by 13.25% in the last five years.
Manufacturing
Manufacturing professionals salaries’ have decreased by 7.63% on average.
Marketing and media
Marketing and media professionals salaries’ have decreased by 8.32% in the last five years.
Music
Musicians' and people working in the music industry’s salaries have fallen by 3% in the last five years.
Nursing
Nurses' salaries have fallen by 6% in the last five years.
Pharmacy
Pharmacy professionals’ average salaries have fallen by an average of 9.62% in the last five years.
Police, probation and incarceration
Police, probation and incarceration professionals’ salaries have fallen by an average of 9.28% in the last five years.
Procurement
Procurement professionals’ salaries have fallen by an average of 10.09% in the last five years.
Real estate
Real estate professionals’ salaries have fallen by an average of 11.72% in the last five years.
Sales
Sales professionals’ salaries have fallen by an average of 11.78% in the last five years.
Sanitation and environment
Sanitation and environment professionals’ salaries have fallen by an average of 10.44%.
Conservation scientists and foresters have seen the biggest salary decrease of all occupations in the last five years, with a drop of 21.46%.
Social scientists
Social scientists’ salaries have fallen by an average of 10.83% in the last five years.
Social work
Social work professionals’ salaries have fallen by an average of 6.07% in the last five years.
Software
Software professionals’ salaries have fallen by an average of 6.51% in the last five years.
Sport
Sport professionals’ average salaries have fallen by an average of 4.70% in the last five years.
Tax and accounting
Tax and accounting professionals' salaries have fallen by an average of 6.69% in the last five years.

We used median salary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook and inflation rates from 2013 to 2023 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index to determine how each occupation’s median purchasing power has changed over the last 10 years.
We then projected these median salaries and inflation rates forward over the next one, five, and 10 years to determine how each occupation’s purchasing power could potentially change between now and 2033.
We also looked at how property prices have changed, using the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s House Price Index from 1991 to 2023. This covered data for all 50 states and Washington, DC, as well as the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the USA. We then combined this with median house price data in the same regions from Redfin.
We projected the five- and 10-year NSA indexes forward to estimate the cost of single-family house in one, three, five and 10 years.
We then used Freddie Mac’s 4.1 multiple of the annual salaries to calculate how much people could borrow for their mortgages and find out the homes that people could afford based on their future projected salaries.
