“The girls who charge the highest rates are not the hottest girls,” Ada Hopper, an escort in Silicon Valley who uses a pseudonym, told Forbes. “They’re the girls who are hot and smart.”

Silicon Valley has long been a friendly market for sex workers, many of whom are able to charge higher rates than they would if they were working elsewhere. But “nerdy escorts” — those who specialize in understanding what their tech-savvy clients talk about — are able to charge even more, often thousands per hour.

Silicon Valley makes it hard to invest in organic relationships
AI workers are well compensated for their efforts. If you work in AI, you can expect to make at least $180,000 per year; while some have salaries that are well into seven figures.
This is especially true for the AI workforce in Silicon Valley. AI workers in the Silicon Valley/San Francisco area make the most, in no small part because several of the biggest names in AI are headquartered there.
But there’s a tradeoff. While AI workers are often rich with money, they’re typically poor when it comes to time. The 9-9-6 schedule — working 12-hour shifts from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for six days a week — is starting to take hold in the Valley. And with more and more tech layoffs hitting even big name companies like Meta, workers might not feel safe enough in their jobs to push back against potential burnout.
All of this leaves workers with money to burn but not very much time with which to burn it. That makes starting a relationship, which can take a lot of time and energy, a bit tricky.
“I am a lot more selfish with my time now,” says an anonymous client of Meida Marek, another Silicon Valley escort who meets with a lot of tech workers, according to Forbes. “It’s easier to pay money for time — there are clearer boundaries.”
Hiring an escort who you already know shares your interests can cost significantly more money, but it saves tech workers time, something they have far less of. It also means not having to learn their date’s birthday, meet their parents or experience any of the more time-consuming or potentially unpleasant elements of dating.

Chatbots aren’t enough for companionship
AI chatbots seem like the obvious first step for Silicon Valley workers looking for a friction-free relationship. But they aren’t, and there’s research that explains why. A study by University of California scientists found that interactions between humans and chatbots can develop some markers of a close relationship, but don’t provide the same benefits.
“Because chatbots make only superficial requests for their users, relationships with them cannot provide the benefits of negotiating with and sacrificing for a partner,” says the study’s abstract.
Chatbots have a tendency to validate users even if they’re wrong. This can make you feel great while you’re talking with the chatbot, leading you to spend more time and tokens on the experience. But, at best, this gets you used to a companion who never disagrees with you. At worst, it can seriously harm your mental health.
Paying an escort to spend time with you certainly doesn’t come with the same sacrifices as an organic relationship. And, unlike chatbots, “nerdy escorts” are real people who can provide human perspectives on things like AI, crypto and economics instead of just echoing back a tech worker’s thoughts on such subjects.
