Hayley Lugo's proposal was interrupted by a passerby's racist outburst. CBS News

A racist 'Karen' tarnished a California bride's proposal — now a free dress is showing 'The world is not full of hate'

Most people have probably imagined what their dream proposal would look like: Where it would happen, how they’d be surprised and, of course, the person waiting on one knee.

For Emmanuel Banuelos, the plan was to propose to his girlfriend, Hayley Lugo, at Crescent Bay Point Park in Laguna Beach, California. He had thought of just about everything: a beautiful ocean view, a mariachi band playing her favourite songs and even her sister, Trinity, hiding nearby to capture the whole thing on video.

But before he could pop the question, things took a turn. A woman walking her dog approached Trinity, threatened to call the police and told her to take down the decorations. When the mariachi band started playing, the woman began making racist comments.

“This isn’t Mexico,” the woman shouted, before telling the group to “Go back to Mexico,” as reported by CBS News.

Trinity captured the confrontation on her smart glasses, and the video quickly went viral. When Lisa Clark, the owner of a bridal boutique in Monrovia, California, saw what happened, she wanted to bring a little joy back to what should have been a happy moment. So she offered Lugo a free wedding dress.

“We live in a world where people can be pretty hateful, so I wanted to make sure that she understood that the world is not full of hate,” Clark told the news outlet.

A proposal interrupted

Despite the woman’s increasingly aggressive behaviour, Trinity tried to keep her cool. The last thing she wanted was for a confrontation with a stranger to ruin her sister’s big moment.

“I could not believe that I was being told those words. At first I thought, you know, she was just a normal ‘Karen,’” Trinity told ABC7, using a slang term for a white woman who is a busybody, often in a racist way.

She said people who saw the video online later reached out to tell her that the same woman had allegedly interrupted other proposals at the park and threatened to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on visitors. When Hayley found out what happened, she was shocked. To her, the comments weren’t just directed at her and her fiancé. They were an attack on her culture, too.

“It hurts a lot because it’s not just us there. She’s being mean to the whole Mexican culture, the whole Hispanic culture … everyone’s felt it,” Lugo said.

Moneywise also reached out to the City of Laguna Beach for additional details and any updates on the incident but did not receive a response before publication.

An unexpected act of kindness

Although a wedding dress can’t erase what Hayley and her family went through, Clark’s gesture was a thoughtful way to show her support. It also means one less wedding expense for the couple to worry about as they plan their big day.

According to The Knot’s 2026 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed more than 10,000 American couples who married in 2025, the average wedding dress costs about $2,100. That price can vary depending on the designer, fabric, details and alterations.

“I feel very blessed to be receiving the gown, and there are still a lot of kind people out there willing to help us despite what happened,” Hayley said. “It feels unbelievable... I’m ready to begin this journey with my fiancé, so it’s all just coming together.”

As for the woman who disrupted the proposal, Laguna Beach officials declined to comment on a private individual but emphasized that her behaviour doesn’t reflect the community’s values, as reported by the New York Post.

“The City of Laguna Beach is aware of the video from Crescent Bay Point Park on October 2. Laguna Beach has long been a place of acceptance and inclusion,” officials said.
