Julia Kagan is an accomplished editor and journalist based in New York City with deep expertise in personal finance, consumer advocacy, retirement planning and health. Over the course of a distinguished career spanning decades, she has held top editorial roles across a range of national publications.

From 2014 to 2023, Julia served as the personal finance editor at Investopedia, where she helped shape one of the internet’s most trusted sources for financial education. Earlier, she held leadership roles at some of the most respected media organizations in the country, including serving as vice president and editorial director at Consumers Union—the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports—and vice president of content at Zagat. She was also editor-in-chief of Back Stage, executive editor of Working Woman, and held senior positions at Fitness, Ladies’ Home Journal, and Psychology Today.

Julia’s contributions have been widely recognized: she is a recipient of the National Magazine Award and the Gerald Loeb Award for business journalism, and she has been a finalist for multiple National Magazine Awards in the service and general excellence categories. Beyond publishing, she has also contributed to business literature, serving as the charts editor of Ahead of the Curve and editor of The Trial of a Social Security Disability Case.

She has taught journalism as the J. Stewart Riley visiting professor at Indiana University and currently chairs the Board of Overseers at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University.

Julia earned her bachelor’s degree in history from Bryn Mawr College and holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from the Bennington College Writing Seminars.
